The Beacon

She has nothing to hide. That’s exactly what worries everyone.

On a remote island off the wild coast of West Cork, celebrated feminist painter Beiv has made a bold declaration: she’s replaced the walls of her cottage with floor-to-ceiling glass. Let the neighbors look. Let the sea look. She has nothing to hide.

But Beiv has lived under a shadow for more than a decade. Her ex-husband Michael disappeared one stormy night — last seen near this very cottage — and his body was never found. The island has long had its theories.

Now her estranged son Colm has returned from San Francisco with his new wife in tow, looking for answers — and forced to confront secrets from his own past. As the family gathers in Beiv’s glass house above the Atlantic, old wounds crack open, loyalties fracture, and the question that has haunted them all finally demands an answer: what really happened to Michael?

A drama about a Dublin artist haunted by a mysterious accident in her past, The Beacon is a gripping, darkly funny family thriller that draws comparisons to Martin McDonagh’s razor-sharp Irish family dramas and Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County — juicy, caustic, and impossible to look away from. Nancy Harris weaves together questions of art, memory, sexuality, and truth into a story where every character is hiding something, and the person with nothing to hide may be the most dangerous one of all.

“Teasingly clever… Harris probes into secrets and lies, making acute observations about complex relationships.” — The Guardian

“Absorbing, intelligent and grimly funny.” — The Irish Times
