England is going under. One man is determined to keep his empire — and his meat counter — afloat.

Sometime in the not-so-distant future, the British Isles are dissolving into the sea. Cities are rioting. Scotland has become a foreign country. And in a Bradford butcher shop clinging to the memory of a glorious past, Saul Everard reigns over his little kingdom of tradition, nationalism, and questionable cuts of meat.

When a fugitive Scottish artist — soaking wet and desperately on the run — crawls through the door seeking sanctuary, the uneasy balance of Saul’s world begins to crack. What follows is a love triangle, a power struggle, and a series of increasingly alarming discoveries about what, exactly, is in the sausages.

Tinderbox is the electrifying debut of one of Britain’s most celebrated playwrights — fast, wild, and farcically funny, with a pitch-black comic vision that cuts right to the bone. Bookmate

Lucy Kirkwood went on to write ChimericaThe Children, and Mosquitoes — but it all started here, with a butcher, his wife, and a very suspicious shop.

“Sordid and larky at the same time… brilliant.” — WhatsOnStage

“Grisly… rings with nasty, maniacal laughter.”
