The story revolves around Emily and John Bridges, a long-married couple whose steady middle-class existence is capsized by a mysterious illness that strips Emily of her senses, one by one. A small kitchen fire, undetected by Emily, swells to a full-fledged physical and emotional bonfire in the approach and the aftermath of the wedding of their only child. The no-nonsense, hands-on owner of a construction company, Emily has always been more comfortable wearing a hardhat than an apron. But as the inexplicable affliction robs her of her independence, Emily becomes completely dependent on the husband whose endless affections she has always taken for granted.
The New York Times calls A Small Fire “raucous, funny, and unexpectedly touching, as we are made intimate witnesses to a frank demonstration of how much of life, of love, and of happiness remain within reach even when so much appears to be lost.” The Los Angeles Times says, “When the play is over, you may look at your smartphone–and anything else cutting you off from genuine human connection–as though it were…threatening your very existence.”
The Falcon production is directed by Ted J. Weil and features Kristy Rucker as Emily, Terry Gosdin as John, Victoria Hawley as Jenny, and Evan Blanton as Billy. Performances are at 8 PM on November 16, 17, 23, 24, 29, 30, and December 1, 2018. Tickets prices are $25 for adults and $15 for students with ID. Patrons enjoy a $5 discount for Thursday performances.
