So how do you follow an amazing anniversary season that consists of revivals of some of the most popular and provocative shows you’re produced through your 20 year history? That’s the question we faced this year as we started to mold our upcoming season. As always, our audiences will be the ultimate judge of our success, but we think we’ve come up with an amazing season to begin our second 20 years.

The season opens in October with a Halloween treat! The area premiere of Evil Dead: The Musical! Packed full of zombies, blood and chainsaws, Evil Dead: The Musical is every bit as campy and fun as the films that made Bruce Campbell famous. The zombies will be plentiful in this outrageous musical about a simple S-Mart employee who ends up saving the world from the undead.

For the holidays we’re bringing back everyone’s favorite holiday tale, It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Drama. This will be the third year for this incredibly popular production which puts you in the studio audience of a live radio broadcast of Frank Capra’s Christmas classic. It’s a holiday treat you won’t want to miss!

In February, Falcon continues our alternating season of classic plays with The Elephant Man. Based on the famous historical case of a gentle, intelligent man so deformed that his only means of survival was as a freak-show exhibit, The Elephant Man explores the beautiful mind trapped inside his horribly afflicted body. Along the way, the lives David Merrick touches are forever changed.

We round out our regular season in May with Jane Alexander’s powerful play about the Iraq war, Flags. As we pass the 10 year memorial since the events of 9/11 that set so much in motion, we have chosen this amazing play about an American family that loses a son in Iraq. When a single act thrusts them into the national spotlight, they discover that the line between allies and enemies is not always drawn on a map.

In addition to our regular season, Falcon will also continue our Fourth Wall series again in 2010-2011 with 2 productions: The Last Five Years, a musical about relationships told in a truly unique way; and Fully Committed, a side-splitting comedy that is a tour de force for some actor playing over 30 characters!

So that’s the season! We hope you’ll join us for each and every play next year. Look for more information very soon about all the shows we have coming up. And in the meantime, don’t miss the rest of the current season as we return to Gilligan’s Island: The Musical and then revisit the gripping drama Down The Road.

The following is a brief excerpt of an interview with Ted Weil and Dave Radtke, Falcon’s founders, about Beyond Therapy…then and now.

The director of Beyond Thearapy, Ted Weil, honestly admits he never thought Falcon would still exist 20 years later so he is particularly pleased that the company is able to, not only present the play after all these years, but also to have the majority of the cast reprise their original roles as well.

Four of the original cast members: Dave Radtke, Holly Sauerbrunn, Dennis Murphy and Kathie Labanz are all stepping back into their roles. They are joined by newcomers Thurman Allen and David Levy who replace the roles originally played by Chris Quitter and Tom Durkin.

Weil marvels at the fact that the characters are not that age specific and that the play works well whether the actors are in their 20’s or in their 40’s. While this was certainly not planned all those years ago, it is serendipitous that the script allows for interaction of the characters in spite of age. “Believe me, we never thought we’d be doing this play in 20 years back when we first presented it in 1989″. “In fact, I didn’t even think Falcon would still exist for 20 years”, notes Weil.

Nevertheless, the re-mounting of the show allows Weil and his cast to make comparisons and explore how they’ve changed both as a director and as actors over the years.

David Radtke notes that 20 years ago he and Weil were more focused on making sure the play’s staging, lighting, etc. were all done correctly and in a professional manner. “This time around we’ve been encouraged (by Weil) to experiment with the script and delve more deeply into the characters, and their motivations, rather than simply worrying about trying to make things look right or try to get a laugh”, says Radtke.

In fact, Radtke notes that perhaps they were too young last time to truly understand and have the proper perspective on the characters. “We all have a better perspective and concept of the complexities of relationships than we did all those years ago”. “This is simply because we’ve experienced many more life experiences”. “Our audiences will likely see a funnier show this time around simply because the humor comes more naturally through the characters with a more mature, experienced cast.”

What good would a 20th Anniversary Season be without a look back at the very beginning? In 1989, we started on this long and wonderful journey by producing Christopher Durang’s Beyond Therapy. We were young, had very little money and none of us had ever run a theater before, but we had great passion and energy. The show was a success and allowed us to continue on to produce a second show and then a second season…and it all just kept rolling from there.

We hope all our fans will join us for this hysterical play. Whether you’ve been enjoying our shows for many years or you’re a new member of our audiences, this play will be sure to entertain. Plus we’ll have lots of photos displayed from some of the very early years of Falcon Theatre.
